Falmouth Art Market features Falmouth Fiddlers, 30 Artisans, and More on Tuesday, July 9

The Falmouth Art Market features the Falmouth Fiddlers and over 30 creative artists on Tuesday, July 9, 11 AM until 5 PM, at Falmouth Marine Park, 180 Scranton Avenue. In addition, there will be a Meet the Author booth, lunch from the Filling Station Food Truck, and ice cream from Sea Scoops. The event continues every Tuesday throughout the summer.

The Falmouth Fiddlers have been playing and performing together since 1998 when 20 local musicians playing fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, concertina, and whistles came together for a kickoff concert at Liam Maguire’s to raise funds for a Cape Cod Fiddle Contest.

The fiddle contests, which were held in various locations across the Cape, and the Falmouth Fiddlers Association itself, were the inspirations of the late Jim Boyce of North Falmouth. One of the founders of the Woods Hole Folk Music Society in 1972, he was an enthusiastic fiddler, fiddle teacher, and luthier, and host of “Fiddlin’ in Falmouth,” a live musical variety show on Falmouth Community Television.

“We welcome everyone interested in playing Old Time, Celtic, bluegrass, country, and folk music,” said guitarist Ursula Boyce, “I love the music and the vitality of everyone coming together to play, by ear or from memory. Jim never learned to read music and encouraged everyone to ‘get off the page’ and play by ear.”

“It is a friendly, open, welcoming group,” said Michael Pavane, who plays fiddle and mandolin. “I love that anyone in the group can suggest a tune to play—or learn to play. We have a working repertoire of several dozen tunes and songs that most people know, but, over the years, we have probably played, or tried to play, over 600 tunes.”

The Fiddlers have several practice sessions a month and frequently play at community events.

Sarah Glover is one of the artisans at the ArtMarket. A Falmouth native, she makes earthy, beachy jewelry, using natural materials and techniques, to provide tools of empowerment, inspiration, and hope.

Glover began making jewelry when her now-17-year-old son was three, as a way of making money as a stay-at-home single mom. She walks on the beach at sunrise every morning and uses shells and stones she finds there in her jewelry. “It’s like someone put them there for me to find,” she said. She also uses semi-precious stones and other materials.

“I believe that jewelry should be beautiful and powerful,” she said. The symbolism of her jewelry is important to her. Her Strong Spirit necklace, for example, features a triangle design that has great meaning for her.

“No matter how much pressure you put on any of its sides, it’s impossible to break, a symbolism that allows you to tap into your own personal power,” she said. “Your foundation is strong and you source all you need from within.”

“I love making jewelry,” Glover said. “As my mother said, ‘the things you make with your hands come from your heart.”

Linda Williams, author of “Orient Express: Molly Elisabeth turns Thirteen in Europe” and other books will be at the Meet the Author booth.
