Falmouth ArtMarket Features Kim Moberg and Heather Swanson on July 25

The Falmouth ArtMarket takes place on Tuesday, July 25, from noon to 6 PM, with live music, a Meet the Author booth, over 25 creative artists, and ice cream from Sea Scoops. The ArtMarket continues every Tuesday throughout the summer at Falmouth Marine Park, 180 Scranton Avenue.

Singer/songwriter Kim Moberg and violinist Heather Swanson will perform from 3 to 5 PM. Kim Moberg was born in Juneau, Alaska, the daughter of a classical pianist mother of Alaskan Native Tlingit descent and a US Coast Guard veteran father from Kansas. Music was the constant in Kim’s childhood, helping her to adjust to the frequent moves associated with growing up in a military family. Kim has received numerous recognitions, most recently 2021 Rocky Mountain Songwriting Contest Finalist, 2021 Great American Songwriting Contest Folk/Americana Finalist, 2020 CT Folk Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition Winner, and more.

Heather Swanson is a classical violinist who crossed over to folk and traditional Celtic music. She performs with her daughter, cellist Krista Lucich, as the Cape Violin Cello Duo, as accompanist for Moberg, in an Irish Duo featuring traditional Irish folk music, and as part of the musical ensemble in “The Piano Man” at Cotuit Center for the Arts.

The featured author is Darby Hobbs, who has written two books for children: Hockey Island and The Tail of Grace and Kristoff.

Hockey Island was inspired by her grandson who wanted a bedtime story about “Hockey Island,” a place where it snows each day. There are no streets, just icy alleyways for all to skate upon, and a lighthouse that beams through the snow.

The Tail of Grace and Kristoff follows the developing friendship of Grace, a musical unicorn, and Kristoff a pig. They find each other in a shipwreck, and bond over their adventures.

She is working on her third book, Color the World in Love, and is asking that young readers send in their artwork to be included in the book. For more information, visit http://www.darbyhobbs.com/color-the-world-in-love/.

This week the ArtMarket also includes the Crazy Quilters, who will have tickets available for a chance to win their 2023 Raffle Quilt, “Seaside Chandelier.” Proceeds go to local charities.

Desiree Azarian is the featured vendor. She makes sea glass jewelry and beach-inspired ornaments. She has been making jewelry for 15 to 20 years, her style changing with the times. Years ago she and a friend sold their creations at the Inkwell Bookshop on Main Street. Azarian made resin frames with beach glass, shells, and sand, while her partner made sea glass jewelry. When the store went out of business and her friend moved out of town, Azarian began making sea glass jewelry herself.

“I love making jewelry,” Azarian said. “And I like the look. I like the beachy colors, and the tourists like it too. They can have a souvenir and a piece of jewelry at the same time.”

Azarian works with beach glass in various shades of blue and uses sterling silver chains for most of her necklaces. She does have some hypoallergenic chains for those with allergies. She keeps her prices low, between $5 and $30.

She also uses semi-precious stones, such as amethyst, crystal, rose quartz, rainbow tourmaline, and other stones.

This is Azarian’s first year at the Falmouth ArtMarket, and she is enjoying it. “It’s very therapeutic being here,” she said.

Azarian also writes poetry and used to rap. “Poetry has always been my great escape. It got me through some of the worst times in my life,” she said.
