Celebrate Independence Day at the Falmouth ArtMarket with live music, the Meet the Author Booth, 25 creative artists, and ice cream available from Sea Scoops. The event takes place Tuesday from noon to 6 PM at Falmouth Marine Park, 180 Scranton Avenue, and continues every Tuesday throughout the summer.
The Familiars of Cape Cod will perform from 3 to 5 PM on Tuesday, July 4. Manny and Linda Dias will be joined by singer/guitarist Frank Carotenuto of the 82nd Street Band. The Familiars sing and play folk, fiddle, country, Irish, and popular music from the 1950s through the 1980s. Manny sings and plays guitar. He has been active in the Upper Cape folk music scene for several decades. Linda is a classically trained violinist with a passion for fiddle style music. She also plays mandolin, harmonica, Irish whistles, and Celtic harp in a variety of musical styles.
Sarah Osborne, author of two mystery series, The Ditie Brown Mysteries and the Flow and Maude Christmas Cozy serieswill be on hand to greet visitors and sign books in the Meet the Author booth.
The ArtMarket will be at a new location this year, still in the park, but on the other side of the bandstand, under the trees, closer to the Flying Bridge restaurant.
Along with a new day, time, and location, the ArtMarket will have an array of new vendors in addition to returning regulars, offering a wide variety of artworks.
Among the unique offerings are small rocks elegantly wrapped with leather and cane by Pamela Chmielinski. Elizabeth Zaitsev also decorates rocks, but with detailed animal paintings. She also offers small ceramic pieces, acrylic paintings, and cut-paper silhouettes. Nancy Colgan is inspired by oyster shells; she paints and collages them to make ring dishes, napkin rings, and shadow boxes.
Other artists work in fabric. Diane Precourt of Buddha Buns handcrafts meditation cushions, Japanese sleeping pillows, yoga mat bags, and yoga eye cushions. Richard Heath of Gramps Granny Stitch designs and crochets soft and snuggly blankets, while Dani Pyne knits pillows and blankets. Amy Riley creates ice-dyed cotton artist tunics and baggy pants, batik sunhats, hand dyed silk sarongs, quilted bags, and art quilts.
Jane Parhiala weaves scarves, washcloths, bags, and more and is the author of Reckless at the Border, a memoir. Susan Morrill makes string-art pictures framed in shadow boxes, as well as watercolor and acrylic notecards and prints.
Nancy Sawyer of Goin’ Fishin’ creates original artwork of fish for her T-shirts and sweatshirts and other items. She also sells her photographs of Falmouth and painted and decoupaged local oyster shells. Martine Binder-Desbiens makes boxes and more out of paper. David Cooperrider of the Dune Shack carves whales, sharks, sea turtles, and mermaids from reclaimed wood.
Jewelry makers are well represented by Desiree Azarian, Abby Volkman of Beads and Bits, Shavonna Bent, Betsy Goren of Betsy’s Heart, Judy La Cava of Cape Cod Octopus’s Garden, Lily Matthews of Creativity by Lily, and Marilyn Rowland, who make jewelry from sea glass, seed beads, beach pebbles, semi-precious stones, polymer clay, metal, and more.
There are several painters and photographers at the market. Joseph Freedman of Falmouth on Canvas prints his photos of Falmouth on canvas. Sandra Faxon of Local Colors makes giclee prints of her cut paper collages and watercolors of marine life, local landmarks, and beach scenes. Lonnie Little-Lex creates fine art illustrations, original paintings, drawings, cards, and has illustrated a children’s book.
Patrick Laughead of Patrick’s Acrylics of Cape Cod offers acrylic paintings of Cape Cod, including seascapes, landscapes, animals, and custom pet portraits. Carl Sheffer combines his love of travel and photography to capture colorful, exotic, and unusual subjects worldwide. Mike Palmer, of the Waquoit Bay Fish Company, draws a variety of marine life in a style he calls ‘stylized realism’ that balances scientific accuracy and aesthetics.
Items for the home are also popular. Carlah Kramer of Cape Cod Artworks creates mixed media art using glass and wood. Susan Morrill makes string-art pictures framed in shadow boxes, as well as watercolor and acrylic notecards and prints. Annie Oberteuffer of mugs and more by annieo makes functional, decorative, and whimsical pottery mugs and dishes, fairy houses, and pendants. William Brown of Pine Island Studio makes concrete planters and macrame planter hangers. Kaley Ledwidge of Seapoint Trade makes natural body products, soaps, sugar scrubs, lotions, lip balms, deodorants, bath bombs, and candles.
